Per fi hui eixim matí. A canvi, no he preparat bé la ruta
del dia i no sé ben bé on pararem a dormir.
pistes forestals relativament suau.
Estem a uns 9 km d'Elizondo, tot baixada.
De tornada a l'habitació em pregunte si potser m'he rendit massa prompte.

Tot i això, Tuca ja bufa ben a gust damunt de
l’estoreta.
Bona nit Tuca.

At long last, we start hiking early in the
morning. However, I have not prepared today’s route well and I do not know
where we will stop to sleep. During the first hours, the fog and some misguided
rain drops accompany us while we walk an easy up and down over forest tracks.
The excessive weight of the backpack is becoming overwhelming, it makes
progressing harder and harder as we accumulate kilometers. Elizondo is the next
city on the route and it has a post office. I'm writing down on a notebook a
list of things that I'll send back home.
Once we reach the Collado de Ursumia we
encounter two Californians that are hiking the HRP (Haute Randonée
Pyrénéenne). This 55-year old couple, experts in long-haul hikes, have decided
to give it a try this year on the Pyrenees. They tell me that they have done,
among others, the mythical PCT (Pacific Crest Trail); a thru-hike that covers
4286 km along the west coast of the United States of America from Mexico to
Canada. We continue talking about the differences and particularities of each
one’s routes (our GR11 and their HRP) standing in front of an information
panel. A little bit later we say goodbye to each other and we start walking
again, each one at their own pace.
At noon, the weather has changed
completely. We haven’t had lunch yet and the heat is suffocating; the display of the wrist watch shows a temperature of 36 °C. Tuca suffers when walking under
high temperatures, and her tongue is completely out. In fact, the last black
spots on the back of the tongue can be seen perfectly. Sara and I call that a
"tired level 3 flag”. The ascent to Collado Achuela ends up exhausting both
of us and I decide to stop to rest under the uncomfortable shadow of a gigantic
beech. The tree is located on a sloping hillside, but that is enough to sit on
the sleeping mat to eat lunch and rest for a moment. While we were resting, I took
advantage of the strong sun to charge batteries using the solar panel. From the
shade, I can see people walking punished by the Sun’s whip; first some people alone, afterwards two girls and finally two guys more.
Once recovered and with more
encouragement, we are back on the trail. Shortly after, we reach a fountain located
in the shade. Next to the fountain, the last two guys that passed beside
the beech are eating and enjoying a break. It was the perfect spot to stop; I
regret to not having pushed myself a little bit more. In fact, I could have
rested here better. I fill up all the bottles with water from the faucet and I
step aside to wash the clothes sitting on the grass, near an abandoned country
house.
The break has been really short; we are back
on the hike in a blink. There are about 9 km more until Elizondo, downhill all the way. While walking, I start to think about tonight's place to sleep. The
guidebook doesn't indicate any possible wild camp sites between here and the city.
Downhill, I am looking everywhere to find a good spot, but we are definitely
too close to the city and it does not look good at all.
Soon after, we are caught by the two guys
we left behind a little bit earlier. I need to speed up a bit to chat with them
on our way down. They are two young Basques, Aitor (teacher) and Aitor (doctor)
who are taking advantage of 20 days of vacations to complete a section of the
GR11 together. They are heading to a hostel in Elizondo which they have already
booked in advance. I tell them that I am looking for a place to sleep tonight
with my tent, but I have had no luck so far. After thinking about it for a
moment, I decide to give it a try at the hostel just in case they allow Tuca to sleep inside.
I continue downhill with the two Aitors on
a path covered by vegetation until we reach Elizondo. Once in the city, we
divert a little from the GR heading the hostel, since it is on the other side
of the city. When arriving, I talk to the young girl who attends the bar and is
also the receptionist. If I pay a private room for the two of us, there is no
problem on Tuca staying.
I scatter the wet clothes all over the
room. After a hot shower for the first time in days we go downstairs to meet
our hike mates. Drinking cider, we spend the afternoon on the street chatting and
planning the route for the next few days. They tell me that their goal is to arrive at Benasque in no more than two weeks. Before the night falls, we have already wolfed
down a good dinner. Whilst going back to the room, I ask myself if I have given
up too soon. Do I deserve the treat of sleeping under a proper roof in a bed?
Have we already earned it?
The heat combined with the humidity from the clothes does not make the
stay pleasant at all. In spite of that, Tuca is already snoring comfortably on
the mat. It is already decided; tomorrow we will start hiking later since we
will have to wait until the post office opens. The list could be longer, but
for the moment the camera, the lenses, a teapot and a long sleeved shirt will be
packed and sent back home in order to reduce weight in the backpack. Now it is
time to rest. Good night Tuca.
